Primer 2018
This project was featured at the Primer 2018 conference in the emerging designer space.
Chime
A smart-hub for the future of education.
ROLE: Industrial Design & UX Design
How will technology impact education in the next 5 years?
Signals:
Growing class sizes.
Reduced attention spans.
Underfunded public universities.
Class Connected
Smart classrooms are a probable future. What impacts will this have on student-teacher interactions?
"Smart" Lecture Hall
We explored the implications of technology in the classroom. We designed as if we were in the future, finding key pain-points of teachers and students in large classes at public universities.
A need for classroom management combined with digital-native students led us to explore smart classroom hubs connected to content management systems such as Instructure's Canvas.
Chime
Designed to feel approachable and friendly. Mounting to the wall makes theft difficult and allows directional microphones to detect speech. Chime connects to a CMS such as Canvas, allowing access to profiles, grades, presentations, class syllabus... etc
Seamless
Chime streamlines the classroom allowing for instant class setup. Chime detects speech and adapts the class session based on student-teacher interactions.
Participate
Chime allows all students to participate in class. Using the live-feed app, students can ask questions and take quizzes. Chime grades students based on this in-class participation and performance.
"Green Sheet"
A re-imagined freshman English course handout. The document was given to students at SJSU who believed it was real. The document spurred conversation between students and teachers about the ethics of technology in the classroom.

Perception
Chime highlights issues of privacy, free speech and techno-reliance that are increasingly relevant in our lives. Some people are deeply troubled by the implications of Chime while others only see benefits.
Reactions
Belief that Chime is a real product allowed for natural reactions to this technology. These opinions and responses are the value of this project. They inform us of how technology should be integrated into classrooms in the future.
The project was given to SJSU as a guide for decision makers when implementing technology into classrooms.
